I trace the root of this problem to my first one, which was a gift (selected by my friend Kim). A sassy silver mini - all the rage at the time, the smallest, coolest thing on the market. I liked it so much, my brother got one too. It was great. Until...
Kim's new nano started taunting me - it was just so small! I could put it in my pocket and not even know it was there! I had to have it. But should I splurge for the 8GB or stick with 4GB - tough call. So after much debate, I went with the 8GB (mostly because it came in black). After a few days, though, I began to feel guilty. Luckily, I found a sucker in my friend Tom and was able to unload it on him for full price. Yes, I call him a sucker, but he really wanted one and needed a little push. I do believe he loves it, so I actually chalk this up to a good deed.
Having technically skirted Apple's harsh return policy, I went back to the Apple store and went for nano #2. (Actually I believe there was also a stint here with a 30GB video that I carried around and debated for a while, but I don't even want to get into that). Anyway, the red one had just made its debut and it was for me. PLUS I was making a huge impact to Aids in Africa or something charitable by going with the red. (yet another good deed - it's amazing.)
My continued affair with the iPod made me think that D1 just couldn't live without one (or maybe I couldn't live without a final trip to the Apple Store), so for his birthday, I compiled all his birthday money and went all out and got him a cool silver nano with an armband for the gym and some sports headphones and everything. What a great gift! Except being the anti-bandwagon type of guy that he is, he said he just wasn't going to play the ipod game, no way. He was firmly against it. UH OH. Again Apple's return policy got me; I was stuck. So I dialed up Tom - yep, he would take it - all of it. The armband, headphones, nano - the entire package. I believe I may have a future career as Tom's personal shopper (but that can be another blog altogether).
So after unloading on Tom once again, I settled down. I kept my compulsion under wraps for a while. I didn't buy into the iPhone craze (not to say I didn't want one but my company-furnished blackberry is certainly capable - and free); we had moved from Memphis where I had such direct access to the Apple store; Kim was a little farther away so we didn't get to compare wish lists as often. I thought I was cured. But no.
Just this morning....
I fell off the wagon.
(Don't tell her, but I blame Kim.)

You are a bad, bad girl. I agree, though. It is Kim's fault. I want one, too!
